How to Remove Stains from Natural and Synthetic Leather

Natural leather is quite delicate and has poor stain resistance, so it requires special stain removers to remove some stains. PU/PVC has average stain resistance and usually requires specialized stain removers.

A very important task in leather care and cleaning is removing dirt from leather products to ensure they meet hygiene and aesthetic standards.

However, whether by hand washing, water washing, re-tanning, or dry cleaning, leather stains are difficult to remove.

Currently, there are many stain removal products for textiles and garments on the market, while stain removal products for leather clothing are relatively fewer. Some stain removal products can be used for textile garments made from protein fibers such as pure wool and pure silk, but extra care must be taken to avoid damaging the coating.

Common chemical raw materials for stain removal

1. Tetrachloroethylene

Tetrachloroethylene is very effective at removing plant and animal oils from clothing. You can use a stain removal brush dipped in an appropriate amount of perchloroethylene, gently brush it on the stain surface, and then use a pure cotton towel to dry and wipe it by hand.

2. Carbon tetrachloride

Carbon tetrachloride (also known as tetrachloromethane) is highly volatile, its vapor is toxic, and it serves as a good solvent for fats and organic compounds. Can be used together with soap to remove grease stains from animal oil, vegetable oil, and mineral oil.

3. Acetone

Acetone is a volatile, colorless liquid, flammable, and its vapor is toxic. When used, it is soluble in water and can be miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. When used together with soap, it can remove paint and various grease stains.

4. Banana water

Banana water is a colorless, transparent liquid with strong volatility and the ability to dissolve paint stains. Similar properties include turpentine and 120# gasoline.

5. Glycerol

Glycerin, commonly known as glycerin, appears as a colorless, viscous liquid that wets and emulsifies stains. Using stain remover together can improve stain removal effectiveness.

6. Oxalic acid

Oxalic acid is a transparent crystalline substance with certain volatility; dissolving it in water before use is effective at removing rust stains.

7. Citric acid

Citric acid is a transparent crystalline substance with certain volatility. Dissolve it in water before use to remove juice stains well.

8. Alcohol

Alcohol is a colorless transparent liquid that removes ballpoint pen oil very well.

9. Ammonia water

Ammonia water is a transparent liquid with a pungent odor, effective at removing sweat and mold stains.

Specialized stain remover

Specialized stain removers refer to those that remove only one or one type of stain. Therefore, specialized stain removers are basically named after the stains they can remove.

During leather cleaning, first correctly identify the type of stain, then select the appropriate specialized stain remover, and follow the instructions to remove the stain.
